The first week of a new gym membership is easy. You're motivated, the novelty is high, and you've told at least one person you're doing it. Week two is usually fine too. It's weeks three to six where most people quietly stop showing up. This isn't a willpower problem. It's a structure problem.

Why Weeks Three to Six Are the Hard Ones

The novelty of a new gym wears off around week two. The habit isn't formed yet. You haven't seen enough progress to feel rewarded. And life, which was briefly cooperating, starts filling in the gaps again. A late meeting, a tired evening, a weekend that got busy. Each missed session makes the next one slightly harder to justify.

This is the window where most memberships quietly lapse. The person doesn't cancel. They just stop booking. Then they feel guilty about not going. Then they avoid thinking about it. Then they cancel in month three having been twice.

The Booking Trick That Works

Book the next session before you leave the current one. Not when you get home. Not on Sunday evening when you're planning the week. Before you leave. It takes thirty seconds on a phone. It turns an intention into a commitment with a specific time attached to it.

This sounds trivial. It isn't. An intention without a time is just a preference. A booking at 7 p.m. On Tuesday is a plan. The difference in follow-through is significant.

Same Time, Same Day

Consistency across a small number of sessions beats intensity across a large number. Two sessions a week for twelve weeks is 24 sessions. Five sessions a week for three weeks is 15 sessions, and then usually nothing. The maths is obvious but the instinct is always to do more.

  • Pick one or two fixed slots per week and treat them like a standing appointment
  • If you miss one, book the next one the same day you miss it, not later in the week
  • Tell someone else your schedule, not for accountability, just to make it real
  • Start with fewer sessions than you think you need, two per week beats five per week for three weeks then zero

What to Do When You Miss a Week

Miss a week. Come back the following week. That's it. The mistake people make is treating a missed week as evidence that they've failed, which leads to a longer gap, which leads to the membership lapsing. A missed week is just a missed week. The session will still be there on Tuesday.

If you're in the weeks three to six window right now and you're reading this instead of going to the gym, that's fine. Book the next session before you close this tab.
